HIGHL IGHTS A D V A N C E D M A T E R I A L S & P R O C E S S E S | F E B R U A R Y / M A R C H 2 0 1 8 7 5 MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Savannah River Site History Lesson The ASM Savannah River Chapter visited the Savannah River Site Museum in Aiken, S.C., on December 9, 2017. The museum is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the his- tory of the Savannah River Site (SRS). Museum exhibition topics include technical contributions during the Cold War, U-2 Spy Plane, radiation technology, Plutonium-238 pow- ered space exploration, and robotics. SRS was dedicated as an ASM Historical Landmark in 2013 due to advancing the materials technologies necessary to produce tritium, plu- tonium, and other isotopes for national defense, research, and medical applications. Teachers Go to School in Pune The ASM International Pune Chapter, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), and ASM India Council, jointly conducted a Teach the Teacher Camp at ARAI in Pune on November 7 and 8, 2017. With a theme of “Challenges and Opportunities in Materials Engineering for Teachers from Polytechnic and Engineering Colleges,” the first day focused on industrial practices and success stories. The focus of the second day was advances in materials and the future of materials engineering. The event concluded with a panel discussion with Rashmi Urdhwaresh (ARAI director), K.C. Vora, T.S. Sudarshan, B.R. Galgali, and Zoltan Kolozs- vary. Attendees included 45 teachers, with over 85% from mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering fields. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Apelian Named NAI Fellow Diran Apelian, FASM, Alcoa-Howmet Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), was named a 2017 Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). He was recognized for demonstrating a prolific spirit of innovation leading to widespread impact. On April 5, the 2017 NAI Fellows will be inducted as part of the Seventh Annual NAI Conference in Washington. Apelian, founding director of WPI’s Metal Processing Institute (MPI), is an internationally recognized pioneer in metals research. He currently directs the activities of WPI’s Advanced Casting Research Center. Apelian is a member of the National Acad- emy of Engineering, European Academy of Sciences, and the Armenian Academy of Sciences. In 2016, he received the ASM Gold Medal. He currently serves as chair of the ASM Materials Education Foundation Board. Pollock’s Trifecta of Honors Tresa Pollock, FASM, Alcoa Pro- fessor of Materials at University of Cal- ifornia, Santa Barbara, was honored with three separate awards from The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). First, the 2018 Morris Cohen Award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the science and/or technology of mate- rials properties. Second, Pollock was selected as an honorary member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). She is one of only two women so named, and the first woman nominated by TMS. The TMS 2018 Alexander Scott Distinguished Service Award, Pollock’s third recent honor, recognizes outstanding contributions to TMS as exhibited by exceptional dedication of time, effort, thought, and action toward furthering the Society’s mission.
