The new professional chap- ter held its inauguration ceremony during a joint meeting with the Material Advantage Northeastern University Chap- ter of Shenyang on December 22. During the event, leaders shared the benefits of having a local chapter, which include technical presentations, networking/social functions, stu- dent outreach efforts, and discounts on ASM educational offerings. Upcoming activities related to the chapter launch include creating a website as well as a membership bro- chure and application. Detroit Hosts Schmidt ASM President Frederick Schmidt made a whirlwind trip to Detroit where he was featured in many Chapter activities. On November 6, 2017, Schmidt presented a fail- ure analysis workshop sponsored by the Chapter. That eve- ning, he was the guest of honor at a Chapter dinner meeting during which scholarships were presented and past chairs were recognized. The following day, Schmidt traveled to Materialise in nearby Plymouth to see its additive manufac- turing and 3D printing processes. He then visited the Univer- sity of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he met with Michigan Materials Society students and faculty, with a final stop at Joyworks LLC. Northwestern PA Learns about Crankshafts The ASM Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter visited Ellwood Crankshaft Group (ECG) – Sharon Forge Plant. ECG, one of the world’s largest producers of industrial crank- shafts, recently invested in a modern horizontal multi-direc- tional press and manufacturing complex to complement its existing forging assets. The tour was organized by William Bennet, Chapter chair. Manas Shirgaokar, director of forging technology, gave an excellent company presentation and tour, with assistance from Chuck Fryman, director of met- allurgy and new product development, and Kyle Froetschel, manufacturing engineer. Members of the new Shenyang Chapter gather for their first meeting. A large contingent of students from the Material Advantage Northeastern University Chapter of Shenyang also attended the professional chapter’s inaugural meeting.
