ASM Handbook CommitteeThe ASM Handbook Committee represents the interests of the ASM Membership and other handbook users with regard to the several series of Handbooks published by ASM International. The Committee ensures that ASM Handbooks are current, accurate, complete, and easy to use. The Committee provides technical as well as administrative recommendations to the Editorial Staff regarding appropriate topics for Handbooks, the need for revision of current volumes, and the needs and interests of the diverse materials community. The Committee also provides broad policy guidance pertaining to the planning, organizing, editing, publication, and marketing of ASM Handbooks. ASM International, founded in 1913, is the world's largest professional society for materials scientists and engineers and has an international membership of over 34,000. The society provides high-quality, solution-focused materials information through publications, events, databases, training, and an international network of local chapters. Granta Design is the world leader in materials information technology. Granta software tools, materials data, and materials database solutions help engineering enterprises to: manage critical materials data, enable better materials decisions, design for environmental objectives and regulations, and provide materials support for engineering design, analysis, and simulation. Rowan Technology Group is a team of experts in coatings and surface treatments, supplying technical and engineering services to coating users and providers, including aerospace companies and the US Department of Defense. Rowan assembles detailed performance information on coatings used across the world, in all industry sectors, and particularly advanced coatings that are replacing traditional coatings in aerospace and defense, where performance and reliability are critical. Keith Legg of Rowan is the Technical Lead for ASETSDefense, the US DoD initiative that collects and supplies engineering data on the performance of clean alternatives to restricted materials. What's in this database?ASM International, Granta Design Ltd. and Rowan Technology Group have joined forces to provide ASM Alloy Center Databaseā¢ users with a rich, well-referenced source of data and information on coatings, their properties, and applications. Rowan plays a leading role in assembling detailed performance information on coatings used across the world, in all industry sectors, and particularly advanced coatings that are replacing traditional coatings in aerospace and defense, where performance and reliability are critical. The database covers over 140 different types of coatings, including anodizing, corrosion inhibitor, conversion, CVD, electro/electroless plate, heat treat, PVD, and thermal spray, to name a few. For each coating there are over 60 attributes, providing robust, well-referenced, and detailed information on:
The attributes are normalized, allowing coatings to be compared with one another on the same basis. You can build queries in an advanced search to select coatings based on a combination of any of the performance and process parameters captured in the attributes described above. For example, you can build a query to find coatings that are alternatives for cadmium plate for use on electrical connectors that have a TRL of at least 6, and have ASTM B117 hours to red rust performance of at least 300 hours. Using a comparison report, you can compare coatings alongside each other to help identify the best candidate for a particular application. This Coatings database is a subset of a larger database provided by Granta and Rowan that also includes restricted substance composition data, and detailed breakdown of manufacturing and labor costs for coatings. This larger database, used in combination with Granta software, enables organizations to apply coatings data directly into product design and manufacture processes for cost analysis, regulatory compliance and obsolescence planning use cases.
