The Iron & Steel Society was officially born on December 1, 1974, but its origin can be traced back to 1928 when the Iron and Steel Division was authorized as a part of what is now the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc (AIME). A nonprofit organization, ISS was formed with the objective to "promote the advancement of knowledge in the technical operations and processes in the iron and steel industry." To better serve the iron and steel industry ISS signed an agreement with AISI in 1986 to publish, update, and sell the Steel Products Manual. ISS is the appropriate contact organization for information on this Manual.
