SIS was founded in 1922 and is an independent non-profit association. SIS is the Swedish member of the international organizations ISO and CEN. SIS operates commercial enterprises in subsidiaries or associated companies. SIS is the central body for standardization in Sweden and authorizes standardization bodies that are responsible for standardization within their areas of competence. Within the field of steel and iron industry there is SMS Swedish Materials and Mechanics Standards (Svensk Material & Mekanstandard). SIS Publishing (SIS Forlag AB) is a company co-owned by SIS and the authorized standards bodies. SIS Publishing publishes, markets and sells Swedish standards. Standards begin with the prefix SS or, if the standard was written prior to 1978, SIS. More than 95% of all new Swedish standards are based on international (global or European) and the prefix will then be SS-ISO or SS-EN. Example: SIS 140457; SIS 141311E; SS 14; SS 141311
