Created in 1946, the IBN consists of both individual and business members. Belgian designations are different for nonalloyed and alloyed materials. For nonalloyed steel (including carbon steel), the conventional designation usually consists of a letter, a number code, and a possible variable third part. There are three different criteria for classification: mechanical characteristics, technological characteristics, and chemical composition. For alloyed materials, the designation system varies for heavily alloyed (above 5%) and slightly alloyed metals. The designations are prefixed with the letters NBN. If they have been adopted by CEN then the prefix is NBN EN Example: NBN 235-05; NBN A21-101
