Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, today ASME International is a nonprofit educational and technical organization serving a worldwide membership. ASME standards are used by personnel in research, testing, and design of power-producing machines such as internal combustion engines, steam and gas turbines, and jet and rocket engines. They are also used for the design and development of power-using machines such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, elevators, machine tools, printing presses and, steel-rolling mills. The diversity of mechanical engineering is seen in the fact that there are 36 Technical Divisions (plus two subdivisions). Additional phone numbers for outside US/Canada are 95 800 843 2763 (Mexico) and 973 882 1167 (outside North America). The upper case letters ASMC appear at the left of the specification followed by an alpha numeric code. When referenced by other ASME standards, standards dated prior to 1989 which carry ANSI in their designation, should be shown as the current ones (i.e. ASME followed by the alphanumeric designation given by ANSI) followed by the title and the ANSI designation in parenthesis. Example: ASME 182; ASME SA638; ASME SA479
