The Department of Defense Single Stock Point (DODSSP) was created to centralize control and distribution, and provide access to extensive technical information within the collection of Military and Federal Specifications and Standards and related documents produced or adopted by the DOD. The DODSSP mission was assumed by the Defense Automated Printing Service (DAPS) Philadelphia Office, in October 1990. Military specifications (MIL) are issued by the United States Department of Defense (DOD) to define materials, products, or services used only or predominately by military entities. Military standards provide procedures for design, manufacturing, and testing, rather than giving a particular material description. All military specifications begin with the upper case letters MIL. The actual specification that follows begins with an upper case code letter that represents the first letter of the title for the item, followed immediately by a hyphen and then the serial number or digits. Federal (QQ) specifications and standards are similar to military, except they are issued by the General Services Administration (GSA) and are primarily for use by federal agencies. Their use, however, is not acceptable to the United States military establishment when there are no separate MIL specifications available. Federal specifications begin with the upper case letters QQ followed by the code numbers and letters. Example: DoD-F-24669/1(86); MIL-B-11595E (military); FED QQ-S-698 (federal)
